POINTS OF INTEREST
In the exclusive Makiki Heights neighborhood, just minutes from downtown Honolulu, the Spalding House features an array of artwork with a large contemporary art collection. A new, school curriculum–themed gallery comprising works from the permanent collection as well as commissioned installations by local and internationally known artists, rotates every six months with topics like art, math, science, and music, making it accessible for kids and interesting for adults. Situated in the 3½-acre Alice Cooke Spalding home and estate (built in 1925), the museum offers changing exhibitions as well as a peaceful sculpture garden with breathtaking views of Diamond Head and Waikiki and a gift shop. On permanent view is David Hockney's opera set for L'enfant et les sortilèges. Previously known as the Contemporary Museum, Spalding House became part of the Honolulu Museum of Art organization, so a single admission gets you into both museums on the same day.
